Poeta y crítico ruso. Publicó sus primeros poemas en 1910. Líder de los poetas acmeístas, se opuso al misticismo y abstracción del simbolismo ruso; escribió poemas apolíticos intelecualmente difíciles, en obras como Tristia (1922). En 1934 fue encarcelado por haber escrito un epigrama sobre Iósiv Stalin. Mientras padecía una enfermedad mental, escribió los Cuadernos de Voronezh, que contienen algunos de sus mejores poemas. Fue arrestado nuevamente en 1938 y murió en la cárcel a los 47 años. Gran parte de su obra permaneció sin publicarse hasta la muerte de Stalin y todavía a mediados de la década de 1960, seguía siendo un autor desconocido para generaciones de rusos, al igual que en otros países.
